A phrases is a group of words that come together to convey a partial meaning. Phrases are distinct from clauses in that they do not contain a subject-verb pair, meaning they do not convey a complete thought. Phrases can be of different types, depending on what role they play in a sentence. In this short article, we will now cover the different types of phrases that appear on the GMAT; understanding the nature and form of these phrase types will greatly help you parse the meaning of sentences in GMAT Sentence Correction.
Types of Phrases on GMAT
1. Noun Phrases – The most important type of phrases on the GMAT, a noun phrase is a group of words that represent a noun; to understand noun phrases, please consider the following examples.
Example 1 -
Jack and Tom
Here, three words collectively refer to one noun phrase.
Example 2 –
President of Belarus
Here, three words together refer to one entity, whichever individual serves as the President of the country of Belarus.
Example 3 –
The tallest man in the United States of America
Imagine, this long phrase, almost 10 words long, represents a single noun; that noun is “man”. The rest of the phrase simply describes the “man”.
2. Verb Phrases – A verb phrase is a group of words that represent a verb; to understand verb phrases, please consider the following examples.
